Biodiversity monitoring of butterflies and moths
Basic Information
Abstract
The monitoring of butterflies and moths plays an important role in recording environmental changes and assessing biodiversity. At the Lake Neusiedl Biological Station, records of butterflies and moths – since 1927 - have been archived in both analogue and digital form in a database, making it possible to identify certain trends that indicate changes in populations, habitats or climatic conditions.
Monitoring involves collecting data on species diversity, distribution and abundance of Lepidoptera throughout Burgenland - especially in the Seewinkel region - mainly using methods such as light traps and light trapping.
