Site Description
Askö Laboratory is a modern field station that offers excellent research facilities and accommodation in the heart of an extensively studied coastal and open sea area with some unbroken data series dating back 4 decades. It is administered by the Stockholm University, Baltic Sea Centre since 2013, former Stockholm University Marine Research Centre (SMF), an organisation devoted to providing research infrastructure to SU and other interested scientists. Long term monitoring of the benthic, phytobenthic and pelagic ecosystems funded mainly by the Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management and to a minor part by the Swedish Environment Protection Board and other organisations are located to the area. One main objective is to integrate research and monitoring to increase in-house, national and international collaboration to optimize available resources and scientific progress. Other objectives: To detect changes in the pelagic, phytobenthic and benthic ecosystems related to eutrophication and climate change, to improve management practices of coastal and open sea areas.

Geology
Varied softbottoms - from very shallow sheltered muddy bottoms to deep areas partly anoxic. The deepest site in the Baltic proper, the Landsortsdjupet 459 meters.
Vegetation
Submerged vegetation and different habitats/biotopes. Highly variable. In shallow bays rather rich vegetation of rooted submerged plant species including Characeans. Rocky bottom from the surface to about 10 meters depth covered with a rich algal community typical for the low salinity of the region.The salinity is about 6 psu. Comments: A wide range of typical habitats and ecosystems are found nearby the station, both very shallow and sheltered and open and wave-exposed sites. A national monitoring program has been running since 1992 studying the open water Station BI), the phytobentos and the soft-bottoms. Further the Himmerfjärden area has been intensively investigated following effects of sewage pollution. The terrestrial environment consists of mixed temperate forests, pastures and meadows. The meadows have been investigated in a national program and the island is a nature reserve and its surrounding waters are a marine reserve since 2001.

Equipment notes
At the Askö Laboratory: The facilities are available for research, teaching and monitoring after application for space and resourses. Office space available for guests: 5-10 depending on season.Lab space available for guests: 90- 100 m2 depending e.g. on season and university courses etc. Capacity (nr of flow-through aquaria and sizes): 9 container/tanks á 1.5 m2 , 10 a 600 L and 3 a 3 m2.
Further facilities: several smaller and larger boats and ships are available as are possibilities for diving and a Remote operated vehcile (ROV). Equippment for sampling and measurement in the field and analysis in the laboratory. Storing facilities, like dry-freezer and -80 C. The staff is employed at Stockholm University but have their working place at the field station, the Askö Laboratory, situated on an island south of Stockholm. The station is managed in close collaboration with the staff, placed at Stockholm University Baltic Sea Centre.
