Site Description
The Strengbach Watershed is a granitic watershed (80ha) located in NE of France, in the Vosges Mountains at altitudes between 880 and 1150 m (omsl) and with highly incised side slopes (mean 15°). This catchment is situated in a remote area lacking human activities except forest management. The forest covers 90% of the area and corresponds about to 80% spruce (mainly Piceas Abies L.) and 20% beech (Fagus Sylvatica). The climate is temperate oceanic mountainous. The site is manage by Ecole et Observatoire des Sciences de la Terres (University of Strasbourg / CNRS-INSU-France).

Geology
The bedrock is mainly composed of Hercynian Ca-poor granite (315 ± 7 Myr), which has been subjected to hydrothermal alterations of various levels with main hydrothermal alterations occurring 183,9 My ago. In addition to granite, which is heavily hydrothermally altered on the south-facing slope and less altered on the north-facing slope, small microgranite and gneiss bodies outcrop along the southern and northern slopes, respectively.
Vegetation
The forest covers 90% of the area with approximately 80% of the area including spruce trees (mainly Piceas Abies L.) and of the area 20% supporting beech trees (Fagus Sylvatica). The catchment is used as a commercially managed forest and plantations range in age from 50 to 145 years. Forest decline related to acid precipitation was observed in the Strengbach Catchment in the 1980s.
Soils
brown acidic to ochreous podzolic soils.
Soils of the watershed are brown acidic to ochreous podzolic and are generally roughly 1 meter thick. The soils are very coarsely grained, sandy and rich in gravel. Soil pH levels range from 3.5 at the surface to 4.5 at 1 m deep.
Hydrology
The mean annual discharge at the outlet for the 1986-2015 period is of about 750 mm (24.5 ls-1km-2) with variations ranging from 494 to 1132 mm/yr. The outlet discharge varied between 1 l/s up to 400 l/s during high flow discharge corresponding particularly to rain events associated with snow melting periods.
