Atlas of areas at desertification risk

Basic Information
Abstract
The Ministry of the Environment considers this atlas as a precautionary tool for the proper implementation of the National Plan for the fight against drought and desertification adopted by the Italian State in implementation of the United Nations Convention on the fight against drought and desertification. The study area includes Abruzzo, Basilicata, Calabria, Campania, Lazio, Marche, Molise, Puglia, Sardinia, Sicily, Tuscany, Umbria. Protected natural areas are an index of desertification response that protects the environment from anthropic pressures. Moreover it was been calculated the intensity of grazing. Optimal livestock load detection allows to maintain a balanced and productive vegetation over time. Excessive livestock load particularly hampers the vegetative and reproductive function of the polynomial species. In addition, excessive trampling gives soil compacting, radical asphyxia, water stagnation, followed by a reduction in the number of plants per unit of surface, until it reaches real degradation stages.
